How 3D Printing Helps Us Build Better Custom Parts for Vehicles and Boats

At Auto Additions, we are always looking for better ways to solve problems, improve our installs, and give customers more options for their vehicles.

That is why we added two new tools to the shop this year: an enclosed 3D printer and a 3D scanner.

The technology is impressive, but the real value is what it lets us do for our customers. We can now create custom parts that fit better, look cleaner, and help us take on projects that were not possible before.

Why Custom Parts Matter

Every vehicle is a little different, and not every upgrade works perfectly with a universal bracket or off-the-shelf part.

Custom 3d printed parts for boat audio system

Sometimes the right solution needs to be built specifically for the vehicle.

That is especially true with custom audio, electronics, trim pieces, and mounting solutions. A part may work technically, but that does not always mean it looks right or fits the way it should.

We want our installs to look like they belong in the vehicle. The goal is to make it look clean, intentional, and high quality.

A 3D Printer Built for Vehicle and Marine Applications

One of the most important things about our new printer is that it is enclosed. That allows us to print with materials that can handle higher temperatures. This matters because the inside of a vehicle or boat can get extremely hot, especially when it is sitting in the sun.

You have to think carefully about the type of filament you use. A material that works fine in a controlled environment may not hold up inside a hot vehicle. Our setup gives us the ability to use materials that are better suited for automotive applications and marine applications.

The printer also has a large build area, which gives us more room to create bigger and more complex parts than we could before.

That means we are no longer limited to only small pieces or simple brackets. We can take on more detailed custom work and build parts around the needs of a specific project.

How the 3D Scanner Helps Us Get a Better Fit

The 3D scanner is just as important as the printer. It allows us to scan an existing part inside the vehicle, such as a pillar or trim panel, and create a digital model of that shape.

From there, we can bring the scan into design software and build a custom part that matches the factory surface.

Instead of testing angles, contours, and measurements, we can work from an accurate scan of the actual vehicle. That gives us a better starting point and helps us create a cleaner finished product.

A Good Example: Custom Tweeter Pods

A custom tweeter pod is a great example of how these tools can improve an install. Let’s say we are upgrading the audio system in a vehicle and want to add a tweeter to the factory pillar.

We can scan the pillar, bring that scan into our software, and design a pod that fits directly on top of the factory piece. Once the design is finished, we can print the part and test the fit in the vehicle. That gives us the ability to create something made specifically for that car.

What This Means for Our Customers

The biggest benefit is flexibility. These tools give us more ways to solve problems and create custom solutions based on the vehicle and the project.

That can mean:

  • Better-fitting parts

  • Cleaner, more factory-looking installs

  • More options for custom audio projects

  • Custom mounts and brackets

  • Solutions for vehicles with limited aftermarket support

  • More control over the final design

Not every job will require 3D printing, but when it makes sense, it gives us another way to deliver a better result.

More Tools, More Possibilities

We have always taken pride in finding the right solution for each vehicle. Now, we have even more ways to design and build custom parts that help us complete jobs to the best of our ability.

Have an idea for your vehicle? Talk to us. We may be able to build a solution specifically for your project.
